Overview

Madurai Overview

Madurai, often hailed as the “Athens of the East” and the “City That Never Sleeps,” is one of the world’s oldest continuously inhabited cities. Located on the banks of the Vaigai River, it serves as the cultural capital of Tamil Nadu, boasting a recorded history that spans over 2,500 years.

Historical Significance

Madurai has been a pivotal center of Tamil civilization since the Sangam era. It was the long-standing capital of the Pandyan Dynasty, which ruled southern India for centuries. Over time, the city changed hands between the Chola Empire, the Madurai Sultanate, the Vijayanagar Empire, the Madurai Nayaks, and eventually the British.

Rameshwaram

Rameshwaram, located on Pamban Island in Tamil Nadu, is a sacred town and one of the four key Hindu Char Dham pilgrimage sites. Connected by the iconic Pamban Bridge, it is renowned for the Ramanathaswamy Temple, 22 holy kunds (water bodies), and the scenic, historic ghost town of Dhanushkodi.
